Yongzheng period (1723-1735)
Repeating ruyi cloud medallions are aligned in offset rows so that they form a diaper-lattice. The lattice floats atop five yellow and white rings arranged in a cross on top of a salmon-colored field. The field is enclosed by a border of overlapping dark blue circles on a medium blue ground. The rug’s abstract symbols represent a schematic for the universe; the cloud-like shapes being the heavens, and the five circles representing the earth (center) surrounded by the four cardinal directions.
